Gold Trading Hours in Kenya
Gold trades 24 hours a day, five days a week; these are the sessions, the deepest-liquidity window in East Africa Time, and the hours to treat with care.
The 24x5 session structure
Gold trades continuously from Sunday evening to Friday evening in global time, which for Kenya means the market opens late on Sunday night and closes late on Friday night. The trading day is divided into Asian, London and New York sessions that overlap, and gold liquidity builds as more venues come online.
The session you trade in changes the character of the market more than the instrument does. Asian hours are generally quieter, London brings the heaviest European flow, and the London–New York overlap is when the most volume changes hands. Plan the time you trade around that structure rather than around convenience.
The deepest-liquidity window in Kenyan time
The deepest liquidity for gold comes during the London–New York overlap, which falls in the Kenyan evening. In East Africa Time that overlap runs through the late afternoon into the evening, roughly when European desks are still open and US desks have started trading. This is when spreads are typically narrowest and fills most reliable.
For a trader in Nairobi or Mombasa, that means the most tradeable hours sit after the working day rather than during it. If your schedule only allows morning trading, accept that you are in a thinner window and size and time your entries accordingly.
Thin hours and the rollover to avoid
The thinnest hours for gold are the late Asian session and the daily rollover period, when positions are financed and liquidity temporarily drops. Spreads can widen noticeably in these windows, and a stop placed close to the price can be hit by noise rather than by a real move.
The rollover is also when financing on open positions is applied, so a position held through it carries a cost that a position closed before it does not. If your strategy does not need to hold overnight, closing before the rollover removes both the wider spread and the financing charge from the equation.
Events that widen spreads
Scheduled events widen gold spreads more than almost anything else. US inflation and employment data, Federal Reserve decisions and statements, and major geopolitical headlines can all pull liquidity from the book in seconds, and the gap between bid and ask expands as market makers step back.
Around these events, the price can gap and stops can fill well away from where you placed them. The practical response is to reduce size before the release, widen your stop or stand aside entirely, and never assume the spread you saw a minute earlier still applies.
Nairobi Clock Versus New York Clock: Why Daylight Saving Shifts Your Gold Session
Kenya runs on East Africa Time (EAT), UTC+3, all year, so the market clock shifts relative to your local clock when the US and UK change to and from daylight saving. New York moves between UTC-5 and UTC-4, and London between UTC0 and UTC+1, so the New York open lands at 4:30pm EAT in winter and 3:30pm EAT in summer. Your chart times therefore move by an hour twice a year, and any session-based plan must be adjusted on those dates.
Daylight saving in the US starts on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November; the UK changes on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October. In the weeks between those dates the London and New York sessions are one hour closer together than usual, which changes when the overlap begins and ends in Kenyan time. Check the exact dates each year because the calendar rule, not a fixed date, sets them.
The practical effect for a Kenyan trader is that the quiet hour before the New York open arrives at 3pm EAT for part of the year and 4pm EAT for the rest. If you trade a fixed clock time, you will be trading a different part of the session for several weeks without noticing. Set a reminder for the two changeover weekends and shift your session markers by one hour for the period between them.
Kenyan Hours When Gold Liquidity Is Deepest and When It Fades
The most liquid hours for a Kenyan gold trader are the London–New York overlap, which runs from about 4:30pm to 8pm EAT during the European winter and 3:30pm to 7pm EAT during the European summer. That window carries the heaviest volume from the two largest gold centres, so orders fill more predictably and the market absorbs size better than at any other time of the Kenyan day.
The London session alone, from about 10am to 6pm EAT in winter, is the second most liquid block and is when European desks set their gold positions. The New York afternoon, from about 8pm to 11pm EAT, is still active but thins as US traders leave. The Asian session, from about 3am to 11am EAT, is the quietest of the three for XAU/USD, and price often moves in a narrower band before London arrives.
For a Kenyan reader, the usable liquid window therefore sits in the late afternoon and early evening rather than the morning. If your schedule only allows trading before noon EAT, you are trading the Asian session, where volume is lower and moves can be less reliable. Plan the hours you trade around when the market is deep, not around when you happen to be free.
The Daily Break and the Rollover: What Happens to Your Gold Position at 11pm EAT
Gold trading on XAU/USD pauses for a daily maintenance break of about one hour, which falls at roughly 11pm to midnight EAT depending on the season and the broker's server time. During that break you cannot open or close a position, and the market reopens at the start of the next trading day. The break is a scheduled halt, not a market event, so it does not itself move price, but it does mean your position sits untended for an hour.
Rollover, the daily adjustment of financing charges, happens around the same time. If you hold a gold position overnight, the swap is applied to your account, and the amount depends on the broker's financing rates, the size of your position and whether you are long or short. A 0.10-lot gold position is 10 oz, so the financing is calculated on that exposure. The exact charge is not fixed and should be checked in the platform before you decide to hold through the break.
The break matters most for traders using tight stop-losses or news-based entries. A stop order remains in the market during the break but cannot be triggered until trading resumes, so a price gap across the break can be filled at the reopening price rather than your stop level. If you do not intend to hold overnight, close before 11pm EAT rather than relying on the break to protect you.
The Weekend Gap and What It Does to an Open Gold Position
Gold closes on Friday evening and reopens on Monday morning, and the price on Monday can differ from Friday's close because news, economic data or geopolitical events over the weekend are absorbed before trading resumes. That difference is the weekend gap. If you hold a position over the weekend, your profit or loss at Monday's open is based on the reopening price, not on Friday's close, so the gap can work for or against you.
The size of the gap depends on what happened while the market was closed and on how much volume is waiting at the open. There is no fixed limit to how far price can gap. A position held over the weekend therefore carries risk that cannot be managed while the market is shut, because stop-loss and limit orders sit in the system but cannot execute until trading begins.
For a Kenyan trader, the weekend risk is easiest to manage by deciding before Friday's close whether to hold. If you hold, size the position so that a gap against you is survivable, and do not assume your stop will be filled at the level you set. If you do not want that exposure, close the position before the Friday close in your local evening.
Asian, London and New York: Which Session Sets the Day's Range for Gold
The London session sets the day's range for gold more often than the other two, because it brings the largest concentration of physical and futures volume and typically establishes the high or low that the rest of the day respects. The New York session then either extends that range or reverses part of it, depending on US data and flows. The Asian session usually builds a narrower opening range that London later breaks.
In Kenyan time, the Asian session runs from about 3am to 11am EAT, London from about 10am to 6pm EAT in winter, and New York from about 3:30pm to 11pm EAT. The overlap of London and New York, roughly 4:30pm to 8pm EAT in winter, is where the day's range is most often confirmed or extended. A range set in Asia alone is less reliable because it is built on thinner volume.
This matters for how you place entries and stops. If you trade the Asian session, expect a narrower range and be cautious about breakout strategies that assume London-sized moves. If you trade the London open, you are trading the session most likely to define the day. If you trade only New York, you are often trading a range that has already been set, which changes how far a move is likely to run.
Public Holidays in Kenya Against Market Holidays: When Gold Still Trades
Gold trades on international market holidays even when Kenya is closed, and it closes on some international holidays even when Kenya is open. The market follows the US and UK holiday calendar more than the Kenyan one, so a Kenyan public holiday such as Madaraka Day does not stop XAU/USD trading, while a US holiday such as Thanksgiving can reduce volume and shorten the New York session even though Kenyan businesses are open.
On a Kenyan public holiday, your local banks and M-Pesa support may run on reduced hours, which affects funding and withdrawals rather than the market itself. If you need to move money to or from your trading account, check that the payment route is operating before you rely on it. The market price is unaffected by the Kenyan holiday, but your ability to fund or withdraw may be.
On international holidays, liquidity can be thinner than usual even though the market is open, because many desks are closed. Thin liquidity can widen spreads and make stops easier to trigger on small moves. Before trading on a day that is a holiday in the US or UK, check the market calendar and treat the session as if it were a quiet hour rather than a normal one.
| Session | Hours (EAT) | Liquidity |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 00:00 – 09:00 | Low |
| Tokyo | 03:00 – 12:00 | Moderate |
| London | 10:00 – 19:00 | High |
| New York | 15:00 – 00:00 | High |
